Happy New Year!

The New Year always bring new resolutions. In some corners of the internet, the new year is met with cynicism. But not here! I may not meet all of my goals, but I love looking forward and conquering new challenges.

  1. Last year, I wanted to read around 50 books. I crushed this goal and ended up reading 70. I was tempted to stick to 52 books this year, one each week of the year, but I wanted to push myself. This year, my goal is 75 books. I’m hoping to slowly work my way up to 100!
  2. Working Out. The resolution that is on everyone’s list. Last year I worked out 30 days in a row! I have literally never done that before, and knowing that I am capable of that has helped push me through the days where I feel like being a couch potato. This year, I have a very realistic goal of working out 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week.
  3. This next one, is going to be genuinely hard for me. Eating out only 2 times a week. I know that sounds very spoiled, but a quick stop through the drive through is often my lunch on the days I forget to bring anything. And eating out is a big pass time with my friends. Wish me luck everyone!
  4. I’m ashamed to say, I also have a goal to be more polite. When I am frustrated at work, I tend to get very short with people. I know this is a very bad habit, and it’s one I intend to work on ASAP. If anyone has any recommendations, let me know.
  5. Finally, I need to post more regularly on this blog. I would like to increase my posts to 3 times a week, but it’s my goal to post twice each week.

What are your goals for the new year?

Coat Time!

I’m not the kind of person who buys a new coat every year. I believe in buying classics that will last a long time. Unfortunately for me, my classic, red, wool coat is looking a little beat up after 10 years of constant use. It’s something I will definitely still wear on the weekends, but I don’t feel comfortable showing up to work in something so worn. It’s important to me (and my employers) to always look professional. Therefore, it’s to go shopping!

The first coat comes is from Prana, and is water repellent. While it most likely won’t be warm enough for below freezing temps, it is great for those chilly, rainy days. Coming in four different colors, and with a cut that follows the line of the body, this is a very attractive option.

I am deeply in love with coat’s that wrap. This Helene Berman does not disappoint! It hits below the knee, and the wrap combined with the shawl collar lets you snuggle in when you need a little extra warmth. But made of wool, this coat will be keeping you warm all winter.

Hello color! These next two options are both by Harris Wharf London. Coming in two different lengths, and in multiple colors, you have plenty of options!

So many choices! Which one is your favorite?

Jewelry for the Office

It is common knowledge that jewelry can really pull an outfit together, and completely change your look. For whatever reason, jewelry is the thing that I rarely buy for myself. Maybe it’s because it tends to be more expensive than a single blouse. Maybe it’s because jewelry is smaller. Or maybe it’s because those counters can be very intimidating.

I’m making a conscious effort to plug the holes in my jewelry collection, and I have my eyes set on the following pieces, which all happen to be made in America!

Both of these necklaces are by Carolyn Pollack, and both are two-toned. I know two-toned necklaces can be a bit divisive. But I like that I can wear either gold toned or silver earrings, and the necklace will always match! The one on the left is 18″ long and is made of brass and silver links. The necklace on the left is 15″ and has rose-gold flowers, silver chain, and pearls.

I LOVE charm bracelets, but the process of getting all the individual charms has always been a hassle to me. This Alex and Ani bracelet has taken all the work out! It’s spartan nature is a bit more relaxing to the eye than the traditional charm bracelets, and more up to date as well. This bracelet is made out of recycled materials, and is also made in the USA.

I have days where I need to dress super conservatively to not offend a particular client or judge. The design on these studs by Carolyn Pollack have enough pizzazz to add interest to the most conservative outfits while still being appropriate. And I am looking forward to these dangly earrings by Alex and Ani on the days I can add a little more flavor.

What jewelry pieces do you have your eyes on?

    1. Pendleton makes a ton of different wool blankets. This one has a personal connection for me as I recently visited Glacier National Parks and LOVED IT!

These are lined, and guaranteed to keep you warm all winter!5. This year for the holidays I plan on going to Montana to visit family. To say my current carry-on’s are worn is putting it nicely. This recycled backpack from Patagonia will work perfectly.6. An ethical fashion book. Need I say more?

7. Have you ever seen hand blown glass in action? It’s magic! I can’t wait to add this beauty to my collection.

Boots Boots Boots!

Booties are one of my favorite types of shoes, mainly because they are so versatile! They can be worn with skirts, but often have heels that are good for ensuring your slacks dont drag on the ground. They are often associated with the colder months, but because they do not go as high on your leg, they can be worn during the warmer months as well.

Some of the following booties are vegan, and some are made of leather. I know many people have very strong opinions about both. But I am here to give both sides options that are made fairly, well and as sustainably as possible.

  1. These faux suede boots are made by Matt & Nat. They are vegan and feature a pointed toe. I used to love a skinny heel, but as I have gotten older I find chunky heels, like the ones on these shoes are best for a day at the office.
  2. These Peep-Toes, by Toms Shoes, come in over 10 different colors including grey, blue, metallic and white. They also come in different designs. These shoes are made of leather and suede. These shoes are perfect for a day at the office, or a night on the town!
  3. These shoes are also by Toms Shoes. They are suede, and come in Beige and Black. Their distinctive wrap around tie is what keeps these shoes on as there is no zipper on this shoe.
  4. Fortress of Inca’s leather boots create a smooth, and polished look. These do not have a zipper either, and have a stacked wooden heel. They are made in Peru, by artisans, and you will feel the quality when you wear them. They come in two colors, Black and Rust.

Fair Trade in Your Favorite Stores

When first looking for clothes that are fair trade, it can seem like there are almost no options. Most retail stores do not have a section just for Fair Trade. But don’t be disheartened! Thanks to the internet, it is much easier to find ethically made goods in your local retail store than you first imagined.

Almost all retail stores, have an online search function. You can use this to search for items that are listed as fair trade. For some stores, such as Nordstrom, it will be that easy. For others, you will have to do multiple searches.

I also search for items made in countries I know to have laws and policies that protect the worker. For example, on Nordstrom’s website “Made in USA” brings up over 10,000 options that includes makeup, candles, clothes, shoes, etc. Made in Canada brings up 153 items, appropriately most of them are fluffy coats. Made in UK has 862 options.

Other stores, such as Modcloth, have a dedicated section for clothes Made in the USA. In these instances, I just save this section on my computer so I do not need to search for it every time I want to shop there.

Finally, I also look at the sustainable sections that Asos and H&M produce. While these may not meet the demands of purist fair trade shoppers, I believe that we can “vote” with our money. And when we shop Asos’ Made in Kenya, or H&M’s conscious line we show these major fashion brands what is important to us and what we are willing to spend our money on, and most importantly where they should expand. While this topic deserves it’s own discussion, these stores are an option any shopper should at least consider.

I hope this helps all my fashionistas out there, and hope it makes your search for fair trade a little bit easier!
